Stand-up Pouch vs Flat-bottom Bag: Which Sells Better?

Flat-bottom bags win on shelf theatre. The box-like base gives four or five printable panels, stands rock-solid under heavy fill, and photographs beautifully for e-commerce listings. Stand-up pouches win on cost: less film per unit of volume, fewer gussets to form, and a simpler pouch-making process that keeps tooling and unit prices lower.

Freight is where the two diverge sharply. A stand-up pouch ships flat and nests tightly — you can fit roughly three to five times as many empty bags per carton as you can flat-bottom bags. If your landed cost is dominated by ocean freight and warehousing, that difference alone can outweigh the retail premium of a flat-bottom bag.

Check your filling line before you commit. Stand-up pouches run on most vertical form-fill-seal and pre-made pouch machines; flat-bottom bags often need a dedicated machine or a specific side-gusset attachment. If you are filling by hand today and automating in eighteen months, choose the format that works on both — usually the stand-up pouch — and keep the flat-bottom upgrade as your next packaging refresh.
