How Custom Pouch Pricing Actually Works
A custom pouch quote has four moving parts: material, conversion, plates and freight. Material usually accounts for half to two-thirds of the total and is driven by structure, thickness and the resin market. Conversion covers laminating, printing, curing, slitting and pouch-making — largely a function of machine time, so longer runs spread the setup across more units and cut the per-bag figure.
Plates are the fixed cost that surprises first-time buyers. Rotogravure cylinders are durable but expensive, and are worth it above roughly one hundred thousand bags per design. Digital printing removes plate cost entirely and is the right choice for multi-SKU launches, seasonal artwork and market testing — the per-bag price is higher, but your cash stays out of inventory.
The two numbers most worth negotiating are MOQ and payment terms rather than unit price. A supplier who drops the minimum from twenty thousand to ten thousand is effectively halving your inventory risk, which is often worth more than a two-cent discount. And ask for a resin price-adjustment clause: it protects both sides when oil moves more than five percent between quote and production.
